The dragline base is a critical structural component of large-scale mining equipment, with demanding requirements for material strength, dimensional accuracy, welding quality and structural stability.
Shanghai Matsuo first delivered the project successfully in 2016. A further order was awarded in 2020 and completed in 2021, reflecting continued customer confidence in our fabrication and delivery capabilities.
The project marked an important step in Shanghai Matsuo’s expansion into higher-value mining equipment structures and strengthened our experience in the Australian mining market.
Location: Hay Point, Queensland, Australia
Project Period: 2011–2012
Owner: BHP Mitsubishi Alliance (BMA)
EPC Contractor: Bechtel Australia Pty Ltd
Steel Tonnage: Approx. 17,000 tonnes
Fabrication Standard: AWS D1.1
The Hay Point Terminal Expansion Project was developed to increase the capacity and resilience of one of Queensland’s major coal export facilities. Shanghai Matsuo supplied key structural steel for the terminal superstructure and offshore piling system, with a total delivery of approximately 17,000 tonnes, including more than 3,000 tonnes of large modular steel structures.
The project involved offshore modules measuring up to approximately 30 m × 30 m × 3.5 m, with individual modules weighing more than 150 tonnes. Fabrication required strict control of dimensional accuracy, welding quality and corrosion protection for demanding marine conditions.
Successful delivery of the project demonstrated Shanghai Matsuo’s capability in the high-precision fabrication and batch delivery of large, heavy offshore steel structures and became an important reference in the Australian port and marine infrastructure market.
Location: Saskatchewan, Canada
Client: BHP
Steel Tonnage: Approx. 13,000 tonnes
Standards: Canadian CSA standards; main structural steel to U.S. standards
The Jansen Project is a major underground potash development located approximately 140 km east of Saskatoon, Saskatchewan. Shanghai Matsuo is supplying structural steel for Jansen Stage 2, with delivery expected to be completed in 2028.
The project involves kilometre-scale mine shafts with extremely demanding requirements for fabrication accuracy. The highly corrosive potash environment also places stringent demands on material selection, corrosion protection and overall quality control.
Through this project, Shanghai Matsuo is further strengthening its experience with Canadian standards and large-scale mining projects, while building a solid foundation for continued development in the Canadian structural steel market.
